How Do They Diagnosing Diabetes in Babies?

Do you find what you need? Look here!

How Do They Diagnosing Diabetes in Babies?I have a 14 month old little girl. My wife and I have noticed that when we give her a sippy cup or allow her to use a straw to drink one of our drinks (water, juice) she just gulps it down. We can give her 8oz of milk at dinner and she will drink 1/3 of it without stopping.

My wife told some friends at work about this and they said that they had heard being overly thirsty could be a sign of diabetes. What are other things we could look for? She is an extremely happy toddler....laughes all the time, great sleeper two 1.5 hour naps each day and usually sleeps from 8pm until 8:30am.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.....

By a simple blood test on the baby.

Things as serious as this shouldn't be left for Yahoo community to answer it for you, see a doctor and get her a blood test and put your mind at ease.

Just take her to the DR and ask him to do a blood test on her and you will know the answer. You can also check it yourself in the mean time by finding someone with a bs machine and doing a finger prick and the best one to do is a fasting bs. This will ease your mind a little.

The dr. can do a blood test same as an adult. I would call her dr. Another thing to look for would be does she go through more diapers then she should. Frequent urination is something else to look for. is she hungry all the time? Has she lost weight? Hope this helps, I'd call the dr.

My son was diagnosed at 8 1/2 months old and he did not have a easy diagnosis. His lips turned blue and so did his fingertips, due to lack of oxygen from the high sugar level of 868. He never went into a coma, he just had extremely high respiration's. Looking back we noticed he had slept a lot for two days prior and was thirsty, and he was soaked in urine every morning. Of course he had just been diagnosed with a ear infection so that explained tired, being a boy maybe the diaper was not on right. The only way to know is to talk to your doctor my friends son is brain damaged because his only symptom was lack of weight gain. He had diabetes for at least 6 months prior to diagnoses but because the doctor only weighted him he went undiagnosed and suffered brain damage and will function as a 20 month old his entire life. See a doctor ASAP know your family history and have a hemoglobin test done for a piece of mind and prevention. Good luck
