Avoid sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates. Eat balanced meals with whole grains at regular times. Losing weight helps control diabetes.

You should consider seeing a nutritionist--most insurance companies will cover it if you have diabetes. My husband's nutritionist put him on a restriction of 60 grams of carbs per meal, which really isn't hard to do. We just don't eat pizza or pasta much any more. We just check the lables, measure and count, and he's doing very well so far getting his sugar under control.
