Does Type 1 diabetes automatically disqualify you from being a police officer?I am 21 years old and I want to apply to local police agencies in Maryland, particularly Prince George's County and Howard County. I have had Type 1 Diabetes since I was 13 and I have always had excellent control (a1c between 5.0- 6.0). I have done research on whether diabetes will disqualify me from getting a job and the results seem to be mixed. Any information or links references on the topic would be a huge help.

No

No disease can disqualify anyone , IF they are able to do the job and pass all entrance requirements.

Good luck.

no.
as a matter of fact they may not even ask about any health issues that you may have until you are actually hired.

YES it can, Most Local Departments will work with you but most state based Agency's will not.

No, it doesn't. It DOES disqualify you from any of the armed forces though. As an EMT myself, I never had any problems with it.

You would really have to contact the local police or sheriff's department to find out for sure but I know many diabetics that work in public safety.
