Type 1 Diabetes and Pregnancy...?

Do you find what you need? Look here!

Type 1 Diabetes and Pregnancy...?Hi all,

I am looking for personal experiences--moms and mothers-to-be with Type 1 Diabetes, how difficult is it to manage your diabetes while pregnant? Does the pregnancy affect your sugars, and is it hard to keep your sugars where they should be? Also did you wear your insulin pump during your pregnancy?

I am just very curious because my husband and I are almost ready to start trying for a baby. I have had Type 1 Diabetes for almost 10 years now and my A1C level is usually between 6.5-7.0, which I though was pretty good, but my OB/GYN said that it needs to be better before we actually start trying to conceive. I also use an insulin pump.

Thanks so much, any responses are really appreciated!!!!

I am not sure if Type 1 is the same as gestational diabetes ... I was diagnosed with it and was referred to a dietitican they can assist on giving you guidlines to regulate the sugars ... mine told me to eat my 3 meals breakfast, lunch and dinner adn three snacks in between all of them ... the best thing is smaller portions and almost like you are eating more but spaced out throught the day ... the major thing is that if the baby is used to getting high amounts of sugar then after it is born it will require the sugars and have to be placed on IV's .... I am not on Insulin and if my sugars stay between 4.0-7.8 the baby and I will be fine ... but the risk of me and type 2 later on in life got greater .... Good luck to you

Since I saw that there was only one other answer, I thought I would try to give a little advice. I don't have Diabetes, nor did I have Gestational Diabetes when I was pregnant, but I am a Women's Health RN and deal with pregnant ladies all day long...:). The most important thing for you to do right now is to make sure your A1C levels stay as low as possible (a 'healthy" level). Try to get your levels around "5" if possible. The most crucial time for your pregnancy will be during the first trimester, when all of the baby's organs are forming. That is why it is sooooo important for you blood sugars to be WELL under control. Fluctuating and High blood sugar levels can have detrimental effects on a developing fetus' heart and brain. If the insulin pump is working well for you, most doctors will want you to continue using it, because it is great at giving you a more constant level to your blood sugar. I'm sure you will also be followed by a Perinatologist (high risk pregnancy doctor).
With a lot of planning and dedication, there is no reason for you not to have a beautiful, healthy baby!
Good Luck!
